What is Reiki

“Reiki is a Japanese form of hands-on healing otherwise known as energy work. The client receives the energy through the practitioner by the laying on of hands. The universal life force energy is channeled through the practitioner, out their hands, into the client. Reiki energy is very intelligent. It goes into your system enhancing/increasing your energy while turning negative energy into positive energy which enhances your spiritual, emotional, and physical wellbeing.” – Heather Anne Cachione, LMT, Reiki Master at out Syracuse CNY Healing Arts

Reiki came to the U.S through Hawaii in the 1940s after being taught to about 2,000 people starting in 1922 by Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist. The definition if “Reiki” is, a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patients by means of touch, to advocate the natural processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being. Reiki stems from the words “Rei” meaning Spiritual Wisdom and “Ki” meaning Life Force Energy.

Rei is said to be wisdom from God, the higher self. This meaning that Reiki energy is a powerful energy that can be used on all. It understands each person and how to heal.

Ki is the non-physical energy where if this energy is low, it is more likely to cause illness or make one vulnerable to illness. A high energy makes for health and a positive wellbeing.

Reiki is often referred too as palm healing or hands-on healing due to the nature of how it is performed. Reiki’s natural method od healing is often very meditative and magical fro both the practitioner and the client.

Benefits of Reiki

The same energy used in tai chi is what is involved with Reiki. It is referred to as “Qi” which is pronounced “Chi”. One must tune into the energy if they wish to feel results as it cannot be proven by science.

“The sensation, relaxation and beautiful experience will leave the client with an overwhelming calmness that comes from such a wonderful healing.” -Heather in Syracuse

Reiki is a great from of healing for the emotional state by changing the energy patterns in the body. Reiki practitioners believe that energy can be stagnant in the body where trauma has been inflicted whether physical or emotional areas of the body. Increased flow of energy can help release toxins built up enabling relaxation, decreased pain and symptoms of sickness. Reiki is based on the idea that there is an unseen life force energy that flows through each of us. A low life source energy is what causes our immune system to be down causing illness. When the energy is high, we are more likely to be happy and healthy.

Reiki has also been noted in aide with cancer patients. Reiki helps them to relax. The healing power of touch can cause a soothing response on patients who may be overwhelmed, scared, and stressed. It has also been said to be beneficial when patients are going through chemotherapy.

Benefits include:

  • A sense of calm
  • Relaxation
  • Better Sleep
  • More ease of movement
  • More creativity
  • A sense of being re charged
  • Revitalized

What to expect at a Reiki Session

Reiki is best performed in quiet, peaceful settings. It can be performed sitting in a chair or lying down. Generally being fully clothed is best. Although at CNY In Syracuse and Rochester, we invite clients to change into a robe for extra relaxation. Depending on the setting, soft music may be played in the background. All jewelry, hair ties, glasses, shoes and socks should be removed before your session. As with any massage, it is best to turn your phone on silent to limit any interruptions or distractions.

The Reiki treatment will include little to no touch at all. Hands are held directly over certain points in the body where the practitioner feels stale energy. Hands will be held in these areas for as long or as little as the practitioner sees fit, or as long as they feel the energy flowing. Hands will be in different shapes and held over the head, limbs and torso. The practitioner’s hands may become warm. Once their hands are no longer warm or tingly, this signifies to them there is no longer energy flowing and they move onto the next area. Even after a person leave their treatment, the energy will continue to heal.

It is a personal choice, but some Reiki practitioners will choose to use crystals  or chakra healing tools to help enhance the energy from the treatment.

A sessions length depends on where you have this treatment done. In Syracuse and Rochester, sessions are thirty or sixty minutes long. Your practitioner may recommend additional sessions after your initial visit to continue the healing process with energy work.

There usually won’t be any talking during a session after going over your health history in the beginning of your session. Always let your practitioner know if something feels uncomfortable. Our practitioners in Syracuse and Rochester Healing Arts are trained to customize each clients session specifically to their needs and preferences.

Everyone’s experience with Reiki will be different. Some individuals report feeling different sensations such as body tingles, heat, seeing colors or images or recalling memories. It is in the patient’s best interest to let these feelings happen and not try to push them away. The more you continue with Reiki treatments, the deeper the connections and feelings will get.

Cost

Reiki ranges in cost depending on where you have your treatment done and length of time. Costs typically range from $30-$100 and if often not covered by insurance.

Side Effects

Reiki is not an alternative to medical treatments. It can be used along side treatment to help support healing and positivity.

Some side effects to a Reiki treatment may include:

  • Weakness
  • Headache
  • Stomach discomfort

Side effects are often short lived and not serious.

In order to avoid side effects it is important to disclose all medical history to your practitioner prior to your session.

If you are feeling extreme side effects post treatment, we recommend calling your doctor.

Evidence

Since Reiki is a form of energy healing, there is no hard pressed evidence of its effectiveness. Clients who receive this treatment do confirm the benefits and effectiveness. The popularity of this treatment is increasing.

From a scientific point of view, Reiki produces results on an electromagnetic level. From recent research, it appears that Reiki and other type of energy-work act to electromagnetically ‘jump-start’ the body’s own healing process by producing changes in vibrational frequency that in turn stimulate physical changes in the body.

The Healing Art of Reiki https://www.cnyhealingarts.com/the-healing-art-of-reiki/ Sat, 26 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 http://cnyhealing.wpengine.com/the-healing-art-of-reiki/ Reiki - CNY Healing Arts CenterReiki is a form of therapy which originated in Japan for the purpose of stress reduction and relaxation.  Reiki is comprised of two words: “Rei” meaning higher power or universal and “Ki” which means life force energy.  This Eastern art relies on hand placement along different areas of the body which help spiritually guide one’s life force as a form of healing.

Reiki is an excellent therapy to use when you’re dealing with life’s challenges or undergoing a difficult time in your life such as infertility, an illness, difficulty with a relationship, or just struggling with emotions.  This radiant healing can bring about peace, harmony and a sense of balance from within.

Health Benefits of Reiki Therapy:

  • Aids the body to release stress and tension
  • Helps the body to heal
  • Reduces insomnia and helps improve sleep patterns
  • Removes toxins
  • Reduces blood pressure
  • Relives pain associated with injuries and chronic issues
  • Helps with energy flow of the endocrine system
  • Boosts immune system
  • Gets you tune into your spirituality
  • Helps you to feel inner tranquility

Reiki differs from massage in that the therapists hands aren’t necessarily on the skin, they can be just slightly above it.

Reiki can help to give you a better outlook on life by diminishing negativity and improving your ability to see positive insights in situations.  It has a positive effect on the chemicals within the brain, and helps to promote healing throughout the entire body.  Each area of the body has its own energy and can become blocked due to emotions and thoughts, Reiki therapy helps to free these blocked areas.

This form of healing can be combined with other modalities such as yoga, meditation, massage, or acupuncture to further heal the body and the mind.  For more information or to schedule a Reiki session, contact the CNY Healing Arts location nearest you:

Reiki for Athletes https://www.cnyhealingarts.com/reiki-for-athletes/ Thu, 18 Aug 2011 00:00:00 +0000 http://cnyhealing.wpengine.com/reiki-for-athletes/ Last year was my first time attending a local race. I attended as part of the CNY Healing Arts massage therapy team offering post-event massage to assist in the recovery process for the athletes. It was so rewarding for me to share my services at such an amazing community event! What surprised me was how much education I provided in addition to actual massage therapy work. So, this year, I’m excited to offer you some ideas and thoughts BEFORE your event so you have the tools you need to keep yourself healthy and performing at your best! Today I would like to introduce you to the health benefits of incorporating Reiki into your routine.

What is Reiki?

For those of you who are not familiar with Reiki, it is a natural method of healing that brings alignment, balance, health and well-being to the recipient’s body. Due to the supportive nature of Reiki, it is a wonderful complement to anything you are already choosing as part of your self-care or medical care. Reiki practice releases energetic blockages, tension, and toxins from the body and is deeply restorative. It looks a lot like massage but is not the same. Instead of manipulating the muscles, it fosters healing that encompasses the mind, body and soul. Reiki is completely safe and has no known negative side-effects. From a scientific point of view, Reiki produces results on an electromagnetic level. From recent research, it appears Reiki acts to electromagnetically ‘jump-start’ the body’s own healing process by producing changes in vibrational frequency that, in turn, stimulate physical changes in the body.

How does Reiki Support Athletic Performance?

The health benefits of Reiki are becoming more recognized every day, and its popularity is growing, due successful integration into hospitals and other health care organizations, due to people sharing word of mouth success stories and because of recognition in the media, such as being featured on “The Dr. Oz” show.

For athletes, Reiki is supportive as a training aid, as a way to heal from new or old injuries, and as a way to improve the time for post-workout/event recovery. It is also a great tool to help boost the level of your overall performance! Here is a detailed list of ways Reiki may support you:

  • Reiki can help prevent severe injury
  • Reiki improves concentration and focus, creating a centered mind
  • Reiki relieves muscle soreness and stiffness
  • Reiki improves post-workout recovery, speeding up the healing of old and new injuries
  • Reiki can reduce the healing time of injury and makes the healing process more comfortable
  • Reiki supports athletes to be calm, secure & focused in the face of stress
  • Reiki supports a positive mental outlook, creating a winning mind
  • Reiki supports “refueling your gas tank” to relieve fatigue and to re-energize

Treatment – What to Expect

During the session, the person being treated is fully clothed and lies comfortably on a massage table with a pillow or bolster under his/her knees to protect the low back from undue stress. Blankets and extra pillows are always available to increase comfort and warmth if need be. The session begins with the recipient lying face up while the practitioner places his/her hands over strategic body positions designed to direct the flow of energy to the chakras and associated organ and endocrine systems of the body. Halfway through the hour, the person receiving Reiki turns face down, and the session continues.

A Reiki session lasts from one hour to one and a half hours in length. The area in which the session is offered is arranged to promote a feeling of relaxation and peace. It is normally quiet with only the addition of soft music. The person receiving can focus on themselves, going deep within, and take a break from daily stress and tension.

Falling asleep or entering a deep meditative state of mind is a normal response to receiving Reiki. This can be an indicator of a number of different factors. Most of us do not get enough rest, and the act of lying down–even for short periods of time–can prompt a state of deep relaxation. Add to that a constant flow of healing energy, and the stage is set for the body to go into a restorative mode.

Once the session is complete, the person receiving is invited to take a few minutes to integrate and absorb the work before beginning to sit up. It is common to experience a deep sense of peace and relaxation followed by a feeling of being energized. At least an hour of free time is recommended following the appointment to allow for a gradual reentry to the world. Eating a healthy meal, taking a leisurely walk, or sitting quietly are activities which often serve as a good transition to resuming whatever is planned for the rest of the day.

The Healing Power of Reiki https://www.cnyhealingarts.com/the-healing-power-of-reiki/ Mon, 27 Jun 2011 00:00:00 +0000 http://cnyhealing.wpengine.com/the-healing-power-of-reiki/ The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words: Rei and Ki. The English meaning of these words is challenging to grasp, since the Japanese language has many levels of meaning. When put in the context of spirituality and healing, Rei describes a higher intelligence that is all-knowing – translating to mean “the higher power” or “God’s wisdom.”

Ki portrays the unseen energy that flows through all living things– translating to “life force energy.” If your Ki is high, you may feel confident, strong, happy, healthy and ready to take on life’s many challenges. If your Ki is low, you may feel weak, stressed, vulnerable and apprehensive. Negative thoughts and feelings can drastically lower your Ki. Low Ki also makes you more likely to get sick.

You receive Ki from food, sleep, sunshine and the air you breathe. Obviously, the quality of these inputs directly relates to how much Ki you can extract from it. One can also boost one’s Ki with breathing exercises, yoga and meditation. With Rei and Ki defined, a loose translation of Reiki is “spiritually guided life force energy.”

Here are a few frequently asked questions about Reiki:

What exactly is Reiki?

Reiki is a natural, non-invasive and entirely safe method of spiritual healing. It is a Japanese technique that focuses on stress reduction and relaxation, thereby promoting the healing process. Reiki is based on the concept that an unseen energy flows through us, keeps us alive, and determines our state of being. The process of administering Reiki is meant to keep this energy in balance and harmony with one’s physical body.

Where did the Reikii deals come from?

There is much speculation about where Reiki came from. Some believe Reiki originated from Buddhism, but most believe that Reiki is religiously neutral and applies to people of all religions, cultures, races and ages.

The most widely accepted origin of Reiki is from Dr. Mikao Usui – founder of the Usui System of Reiki. Born August 1865 in Yago, Japan, Mikao Usui was known as a hypersensitive spiritualist. Facing personal and business failure, he embarked on a 21-day training course in March 1922.

While meditating under a waterfall on Mt. Kurama, the power of Reiki energy is said to have entered him – giving him the ability to heal others without damaging his own energy. From here he developed his notorious system of healing.

How does Reiki work?

We are alive because life force flows through us -nourishing our organs and cells, and supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow is disrupted, it causes damage to and diminished function of the physical body.

Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of one’s energy field and charging them with positive energy. It is thought to shake loose the negative thoughts and feelings attached to one’s energy field, thereby clearing the energy pathways and allowing a healthy flow of life force.

What is Reiki? https://www.cnyhealingarts.com/what-is-reiki/ Wed, 08 Sep 2010 00:00:00 +0000 http://cnyhealing.wpengine.com/what-is-reiki/ Reiki at CNY Healing ArtsCNY Healing Arts in Rochester now offers Reiki!
The Complementary and Alternative Medicine branch of the National Institutes of Health (US) classifies Reiki as a form of energy medicine. A Japanese word, Reiki has been translated to mean the “universal life force.” Specifically, rei refers to the greater spirit of energy that surrounds the cosmos; and ki refers to the life energy which is part of every being and thing. Reiki practitioners are attuned to tap into and channel this life force energy in order to activate the body’s natural healing abilities.

The human body contains hundreds of areas where there is focused and concentrated energies. When you receive Reiki, the focus is usually on the seven major energy centers or chakras (Sanskrit for wheel). The seven chakras correspond to the the body’s principle glands and organs. While using specific hand positions either above or on these areas, Reiki practitioners access the life force energy. Reiki, then, is meant to help us return to balance, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It supports wellness and strengthens our natural ability to heal by encouraging that balance.

History of Reiki
Reiki originated in the early 1900s in Japan with lay Buddhist monk, Mikao Usui. Drawing on experience and knowledge combined with profound enlightenment during a 21-day fasting retreat, Usui developed a system of natural healing. By 1922 he started a healing society named “Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai.” Shortly after, he opened a clinic to give and teach Reiki Between 1922 and his death in 1926, Usui taught over 2000 students, training a handful to be teachers to spread this simple healing system to people worldwide.

This passing on of Reiki from one to another is referred to as lineage. If you “have Reiki” you are part of a succession of teachers leading back to the founder.

Receiving a Reiki Treatment
Reiki treatments traditionally occur on a massage table. A one hour treatment involves the client lying both face up and face down. During the course of the hour long or half hour treatment, the Reiki practitioner is guided by certain hand placements, above on directly on the body. Many times, clients request a certain intention or focus for the session. However, anyone can receive a Reiki treatment, and even if there is not a specific request for treatment—the practitioners hands will be guided to the right areas.

Receiving Reiki can be a very meditative and magical experience for both the practitioner and the client. No two sessions are alike. The most commonly reported results of a Reiki treatment are: a sense of calm and relaxation, a higher level of awareness, better sleep, more ease of movement, more creativity, and a sense of being recharged and revitalized.

Reiki can do no harm! It goes where it needs to go for the highest healing of the client. The energy also continues even after the client has left the healing room. Reiki practitioners can also send Reiki healings from a distance if someone is in need and hours, days or even oceans away!

Come and experience a Reiki session for yourself at CNY Healing Arts Center!

Becoming and Feeling your best Through Massage and Reiki! https://www.cnyhealingarts.com/becoming-and-feeling-your-best-through-massage-and-reiki/ Thu, 08 Apr 2010 00:00:00 +0000 http://cnyhealing.wpengine.com/becoming-and-feeling-your-best-through-massage-and-reiki/ CNY Healing Arts, Massage, Reiki, Energy HealingSo, just how good do you want to feel?  How great is your capacity for peace, joy, love and expansion?  Have you considered these questions lately and do you believe it’s possible to feel out of this world fantastic in body, mind and spirit?  Massage, Reiki and Energy Healing are just a few of the time honored healing modalities that might be the answer to setting you on this path. At CNY healing Arts Center, you will find highly skilled and caring Massage and Reiki practitioners ready to help get you started.

It all begins with you and making the decision to commit to loving yourself and giving yourself what you need to feel really good and be at your absolute best!  When you feel good, no bodily aches or pains and light in your heart, your capacity for the higher vibrating emotions of joy, love and peace are far greater.  We feel more at ease in the world, more positive and effective.  And guess what?  You are not the only one who will benefit from these feelings—yes the ripple effect is real.  Your good feelings will be felt by others.

It makes a considerable difference when you make a commitment to including regular sessions of Massage, Reiki or energy healing a part of your self-care routine.  When received regularly, you will find the effects to be cumulative and feelings of well-being become more sustainable.  How often you receive healing work is really up to you and what’s happening in your life at the time.  In times of a life crisis, extreme emotional stress or in physical pain, weekly massage is recommended while bi-weekly sessions are recommended for maintenance.   Many people also seek out healing to support their personal and spiritual growth— helping to shed layers of the old and renewing their vitality and sense of self.

So how will these wonderful healing modalities help you?  Massage Therapy is a form of therapy that most people understand.  It directly affects the health and function of the physical body, decreasing painful sensations due to stress or injury and restoring flexibility and structural balance. This helps us feel better and function better.  Massage affects us positively on the emotional and spiritual levels as well.  When we receive loving touch, our whole being relaxes and those feel good brain chemicals are released for your enjoyment and health.  Massage also helps to soften us emotionally as the tension from guarding against painful experiences is melted away.  A sense of expansion and receptivity ensues, opening you to new experiences and ways of being.

Reiki is a healing modality that presently still remains a mystery to most people. That’s changing however as its gentle power continues to be embraced by the mainstream.  We see more Hospitals today integrating this modality into their protocol for healing.  This is a great sign that we are, as a society, embracing and integrating the power of both allopathic and natural forms of healing.

So about Reiki– Reiki means spiritually guided life force energy.  It’s a very ancient Tibetan laying-on of hands healing technique which channels this life force energy into the recipient for healing on all levels.  It is a simple, gentle, effective and powerful method of natural healing that creates a feeling of being held in the most gentle and loving arms.
A Reiki practitioner has received a special attunement from a Reiki Master which enables them to tap into this unlimited source of energy and transfer it to whomever they place their hands on.  The energy has a wisdom within it which guides it to wherever it is needed for healing and balancing the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels of one’s being.

Reiki is always performed on a fully clothed person in a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.  A treatment usually takes about an hour and leaves one with a blissful feeling of relaxation and well-being.

Reiki is often recommended for a range of conditions and is especially helpful during times of acute emotional stress and vulnerability.  Reiki may also be integrated into a massage session by a trained practitioner.

So what are you waiting for? Life can be and feel out of this world fantastic. The staff at CNY Healing Arts are ready to help you find the right combination of therapies to suit your needs and get you on your way to feeling and being your best!
