What is Reflexology

Reflexology in Syracuse is under the category of massage and acupuncture. It is where pressure is applied to different points in the hands, feet and ears that correlate to different parts of the body such as organs or body systems. Applying pressure to these pressure points have specific health benefits. In Syracuse and Rochester NY, we have trained practitioners who will help ease your pain and tension with a customized reflexology treatment.

Understanding a foot reflexology chart

Therapists use a foot map to determine which pressure points correlate to the specific body parts. The right foot applies to the right side of the body and same goes for the left foot and left body.

When pressure is applied to specific parts of the foot, it directly correlates to other parts of the body.

  • Toes = Head
  • Ball of Foot = Heart, Chest
  • Arch of Foot = Liver, Pancreas, Kidneys
  • Heel of Foot = Low Back, Intestines

Additionally, pressure points have been known to help balance the nervous system. A balanced nervous system can result in endorphins which help aide in the recovery from pain or stress.

How Reflexology Works/Traditional Chinese Medicine

Reflexology has roots in traditional Chinese medicine and the belief of “Qi” which means “vital energy”. According to the traditional Chinese medicine background, Qi flows through each of us and when a person is stressed or under pressure, their Qi is blocked which causes the body to be out of balance leading to possible injury or illness.

Difference between Foot Massage and Reflexology

Reflexology differs from a foot massage because of the different techniques used. A foot massage manipulates muscles to improve circulation and results in over all relaxation. A foot massage does not focus on pressure points but focus on the foot and tissue as a whole.

A typical foot massage is performed by hands but sometimes can use sticks or rollers to better stimulate the muscles. Practitioners use kneading techniques from the soul of the foot up through the arch and to the toes. The use of kneading helps release any tension you hold in your body.

A foot massage not only helps rejuvenate your feet, but also brings an overall relaxation to the entire body.

It is said that even a 10 minute foot massage before going to sleep can greatly help with sleep patterns and release tensions on the feet and lower body by improving blood circulation.

Since there are so many pressure points in the feet, even if it is a strict foot massage and not reflexology, the manipulation of muscles helps with lowering anxiety, blood pressure and helps with people who suffer from plantar fasciitis.

This is a great treatment to get if you are pregnant especially when they are in the last trimester. Foot massage can help decrease water retention in the feet and ankles.

Overall , the main different between a foot massage and reflexology is the techniques used. Reflexology focuses on pressure points which correlate to specific part of the body, where a foot massage focuses on just the foot as a whole.

Differences from other treatments

Massage and Reflexology differ in the fact that regular massage manipulates large areas of muscle tissue often the full body whereas reflexology is only pressure points in the hands, feet and ears.

Reiki differs by applying light to no touch on the physical body. Reiki relay’s on energy work being transferred from the practitioner’s hands to the body of the client.

Like acupuncture, reflexology uses pressure points to influence other parts of the body system. They differ since acupuncture uses points on the entire body where reflexology uses pressure points only points in the hands, feet and ears.

What to expect

During a treatment at our Syracuse CNY Healing Arts, you will initially discuss your health history with your practitioner. From there, your practitioner will choose specific pressure points to relieve pain, reduce stress or aide in the goal you are looking to achieve with a reflexology session. Sessions are typically a half hour or one hour treatment. For best results, your practitioner might recommend multiple sessions. This varies per person.

Reflexology should not be painful. Most people find it to be a relaxing session. Areas that feel tender might need extra work. Your practitioner may spend extra time on these points. If at any point it is too uncomfortable, always let them know. The use of pressure will decrease the soreness you may feel.

A common question is, what if you are tickleish? Practitioners use firm pressure on the feet. Generally this means you will not have that tickle feeling.

Safety & Side effects

Reflexology is generally a safe treatment to receive. It is categorized under the acupuncture or foot massage category. It is noninvasive and comfortable to receive. If you do have the following issues, it would be best to check with your doctor before receiving treatment as well as provide an accurate health history to your practitioner prior to receiving treatment.

  • Circulatory problems in the feet
  • Blood clots
  • Gout, foot ulcers or fungal infections
  • Open wounds on hands or feet
  • Thyroid problems
  • Epilepsy
  • A low platelet count that could cause you to bruise easily

*If you are pregnant, be sure to let your therapist know as some pressure points can induce contractions

Some side effects might include lightheadedness, tender feet or emotional sensitivity. These will subside shortly. Like any massage, it is important to drink plenty of water following your treatment and make sure you are well enough to drive afterwards. Taking a few moments to sip on water and relax before moving quickly is recommended.

Costs

The cost typically ranges from $40-$100 per session.

From the Soul of the Heart to the Sole of the Foot https://www.cnyhealingarts.com/from-the-soul-of-the-heart-to-the-sole-of-the-foot/ Tue, 18 Jan 2011 00:00:00 +0000 http://cnyhealing.wpengine.com/from-the-soul-of-the-heart-to-the-sole-of-the-foot/ One good way to keep the heart circulating is through the feet. Why not have your feet massaged? After all, they include reflex areas to the heart and other glands and organs. This is the science of reflexology.  It is a unique method of using the thumb and fingers on reflex areas to; relieve stress and tension, improve blood supply, promote the unblocking of nerve impulses and help the body improve homeostasis.

A way to understand it better is the palm of the hand and the sole of the foot are like a map of the body. The left hand and foot represent the left side of the body as the right hand and the right foot represent the right side. The body is divided into 10 longitudinal zones, 5 on each side of the body. This is also called zone therapy. Massaging or pressing each area can stimulate energy flow, blood nutrients, and nerve impulses to the corresponding body zone and thereby relieve ailments in that zone.

If you are someone who tries to drink a lot of water and does deep breathing exercises either in yoga, meditation, or other modalities you are already ahead of the game. Water is the conductor of the electrical stimulus that is created through reflexology. Absence of liquid in the cells of the nerve structures hinder the movement of the nerve signals, hence NO RESPONSE. Deep breathing exercises enhance the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Through breathing the blood stream carries oxygen to our cells.

It is fascinating to think reflexology was practiced as early as 2330b.c. by the Egyptian culture, 2704b.c. by the Chinese, and later on in Japan. In the west the concept began to emerge in the 19th century with European and Russian research into the nervous system and reflex. Therapies were created as medical practices but soon gave way to the prevalent use of surgery and drugs. Finally, the ideas of reflexology for health improvement were brought to America in 1909 by Dr. William F. Fitzgerald. Physiotherapist Eunice Ingham developed the method publishing a book in 1938.

Looking for research studies? Hundreds of reflex studies have been conducted. One survey of 170 people showed a positive result for 83%. A Chinese survey of 8,096 case studies noted a 94% effective or significant effective rate.

Significant areas of study include; stress and anxiety, lessening of pain and cancer care, as well as health concerns for individuals of all ages.

How can reflexology increase fertility? Correcting imbalances that may hinder fertility by:
a. Reducing stress. High levels of stress can trigger neuro-chemical changes which can hinder the release and maturation of the eggs.
b. Help in balancing the endocrine system by stimulating the ovary reflex point.

Please do keep in mind reflexology is a compliment to medical and other aids. With 52 bones in our feet making up 25% of all the bones in our body let’s make sure our soles are walking in the right direction for balance and good health.

Yoga and Reflexology https://www.cnyhealingarts.com/yoga-and-reflexology/ Wed, 06 Oct 2010 00:00:00 +0000 http://cnyhealing.wpengine.com/yoga-and-reflexology/ Yoga at CNY Healing Arts CenterHow often during the day to we give gratitude for our hands and feet? I would not be typing this article, were it not for the mobility and flexibility of my hands. I would not be practicing yoga, walking, standing or dancing daily without the use of my fabulous two feet!

Ancient yogis were aware of the subtle energies or prana flowing through the body. Without the distractions of technology and industrialization, their lives were simple, and their daily routines involved self-body massage, yogic cleansing practices, and breathing techniques (pranayama), combined with yoga and meditation practice. In our busy culture, most of us barely have time for a few minutes of stretching or breathing in the morning, let alone hours of body and mind balancing exercises!

– Care for your Hands and Feet –

Today, Reflexology is a practice that is used to boost the immune system and bring the body back into balance. People who go to Reflexologists receive a full hour or half hour treatment on just their hands and feet. The hands and feet are said to be small maps of the entire body. Therefore, receiving a Reflexology session can be like receiving a full body massage…with slightly different effects. The science of Reflexology targets the reflexes instead of working directly on the corresponding body part. Through this, you are stimulating the body from within, whereas massage soothes the muscles from without. By stimulating the reflex of a troubled area, the body promotes healing in that area.

– Combining Yoga and Reflexology –

One of my very 1st experiences with Reflexology was when I first began to study yoga. I would do daily practices in Deepak Chopra’s book, Perfect Health, where he instructed self-body massage, like the ancient yogis practiced. Part of this self-massage was foot and hand massage. I remember enjoying the sensation of massaging my own feet, wondering why I’d never attempted it before? Just the foot and hand massage alone helped deepen my own yoga practice—letting me feel my two feet more firmly planted on the ground, and my two hands as well.

– Benefits –
Both Yoga and Reflexology are Holistic, working on integrating and restoring balance to the body, mind, and spirit. Yoga balances the body and mind by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, allowing you to come out of stress mode and into a state of relaxation and rejuvenation.

Reflexology boosts the immune system and alleviates chronic body conditions, such as:

• Sinus /Allergies
• Migraines
• Thyroid issues
• Body Pain / Back Pain
• Anxiety / Depression
• Frequent Headaches
• Loss of Appetite
• Constipation
• Tiredness / Loss of Energy
• Tension / Stress
• Shoulder Pain
• Swelling of legs / Varicose veins
• Urinary Problems
• Insomnia
• Cervical Pain
• Menopause
• Numbness of hands and fingers
• Mental and Emotional Disorders

A yoga class that combines some basic Reflexology techniques will allow you to really tune into your body in a deeper way and release some deep held tension or chronic issues.
